Victoria Pendleton boyfriend: The truth about their illicit love

Victoria Pendleton's boyfriend is the Australian sports scientist Scott Gardner. He was a former Team GB coach but began an illicit relationship with Victoria before Beijing 2008. The pair of them fell in love - despite never going on a date together - and he quit the team so he could be with her, as relationships between coaches and athletes were banned.

This caused a lot of upset within the Team GB squad, as many coaches, team members and cyclists did not want to lose Scott. Victoria said the time was the most difficult of her life, and says she was shunned by fellow Team GB cyclists angry with her. She said she flet 'numb' the day that the pair went public.

But the despite the troubles, Victoria went on to great things and the couple remained together. Scott has also been invited back to Team GB now that Victoria has retired from professional cycling.

Victoria Pendleton book

The glamour girl of cycling opens up, for the first time, in searingly honest detail about what drives her to compete in a sport she no longer loves. Written with Donald McRae, 2 time winner of the William Hill Award, 'Between the Lines' promises to be THE Olympic autobiography.

Victoria Pendleton MBE is not your typical female athlete.

Admired as much by the weekly glossies as she is the newspaper back pages, she transcends her sport.

In 2005 she became first British female to win Gold at the cycling World Championships in 40 years. She followed it up with gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in 2006 and another World Championship in 2007.

Arriving in Beijing for the 2008 Olympic Games, Pendleton was on top of the world. She didn’t disappoint.

In an enthralling example of track cycling, Pendleton took Gold and joined the ranks of British Olympic heroes.

And then it started to go wrong.

Feted by the press and the public alike, behind the scenes the cracks and strains started to show. Despite retaining her World Champion status in 2009, it was a close run thing and her shield of invincibility started to drop. Victoria was falling out of love with her sport.

The sport that had made her was starting to tear her apart.

'Between the Lines' documents the considerable lows as well as the well-known highs and reveals why Victoria almost turned her back on cycling before rediscovering her Championship winning form in 2011, the day after suffering one of her most humiliating days on the track.

Hitting the shelves within a matter of weeks from the end of her Olympic programme and written with Donald McRae, two time winner of the William Hill Sports Book of the Year, 'Between the Lines' promises to be the most honest and emotional book from an Olympian to date.

Victoria Pendleton celebrates with a Union Jack after winning gold in the kierin at London 2012
Victoria celebrated the victory draped in the Union Jack. It was a particularly joyous moment as she was disqualified from the women's spring only a day earlier. And the race was her second to last attempt at taking a gold medal before she retires after the London 2012 Olympics.

She was clearly more determined than ever to win - and mounted a lightning fast acceleration to come from fourth to first place. She held onto the position for roughly one and a half laps.

The Chinese rider was closing in on her on the finishing straight but Victoria was able to hang on to make it across the finishing line in first place.

The stunning victory set her up perfectly for the women's sprint the next day.

Miss Pendleton won a gold medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. She is the most successful British female cyclist of all time.
